Happy Gopher Tortoise Day! Let’s get to know our Gopher Tortoise, Digger! Gopher tortoises have flattened feet and powerful claws to dig deep burrows that provide safety from predators and harsh weather. Many animals seek out safety, nesting, or shelter in burrows created by gopher tortoises; over 350 species have been documented to do so. Digger came to the River Museum after he was previously a pet for 35 years. Gopher tortoises have been known to live to 60 years of age in the wild, though ma

Spring is in the air and we've got the perfect yard care solution for you: a hungry gopher tortoise. Just kidding — you're unlikely to even find one as these animals spend around 80% of their lives underground. As this species' name suggests, the gopher tortoise is an expert at living underground — just like a gopher. Gopher tortoises have shovel-like front legs and strong, thick back legs to help them dig intricate burrows. Yet despite their subterranean nature, gopher tortoises are in a fight

Take a look inside a gopher tortoise burrow! Biologists discovered a tortoise deep inside this burrow at Branan Field WEA in northeast Florida during a survey in December. Gopher tortoise burrows average 15 feet in length and 6.5 feet deep. The standard methodology we use is Line Transect Distance Sampling (LTDS) with burrow scoping that allows biologists to count actual tortoises and not just the burrows. Historically, the FWC counted burrows and estimated two burrows per tortoise. The LTDS met

Hear ye, hear ye! Gus the Gopher Tortoise (also known as Gopher Gus the Lettuce King, Gussy, Gustopher, Gussie, Le Gus, our beloved Gus) is celebrating 103 years this Sunday, August 10th! What makes this extra special? Gopher tortoises like Gus usually live an average of 40-80 years. His age makes Gus the oldest known living gopher tortoise. Gopher tortoises are not native to Canada. Gus is originally from Florida, where he was purchased from a reptile zoo in the 1940s. He was then brought to No

This Gopher Tortoise (23-1839) was discovered by Fort Lauderdale residents because his shell had been painted with bright colors. Fortunately, he was in good health otherwise. Because tortoises and other turtle species absorb vitamins via the sun’s UV rays, paint on their shell can severely compromise their health and can also prevent them from camouflaging from predators. After 79 days in rehabilitation, his shell was back to its normal coloration and he was ready to return to the wild. Happy F

Little Gopher Tortoise, Big Appetite 🥬🐢 This hungry juvenile is munching its way through vegetation and fueling up for a long life in the Florida wild. Gopher Tortoises can live up to 60 years in the wild and dig multiple burrows throughout their lifetime, creating shelter for hundreds of species in the process. A connected and protected Florida Wildlife Corridor ensures these tortoises have the space, food, and habitat available to live out their long lives as a keystone species. | Florida Wi
